Short feedback loops

If you’re not making enough progress, it’s because either:

a) You don’t have clear, measurable weekly and quarterly goals

b) You aren’t holding yourself and others accountable effectively and regularly enough

c) Or you haven’t yet adapted your approach to work in this environment.

One of the practices that sets apart leading managers is measuring what matters in short feedback loops.

I ran a research study some years back to understand how different types of managers use metrics. To a person, the senior leaders were successful because they managed by the numbers and used the feedback to adapt.

The thing is

The shorter your feedback loop (between setting the plan and measuring the result), the faster you will improve.

The more fascinated and the less judgemental you are about what can be improved, the faster you will improve.

Your points of leverage are measuring, adapting behaviour rapidly, and having constructive conversations.

Also — knowing this doesn’t make the difference. Doing it does 🙂

Best,
—D
